Based out of Draper Utah, Christopher Ryan started Utah Hive Mind Apiary because of his passion for bee-keeping and want to decrease food waste from the local restaurant industry. The Hive Apiary hand selects fats and oils from local sources and then naturally refines them until they are acceptable to use in their soap. Depending on what “waste” fats and oils are siphoned, the soap scents are constantly changing.

The Hive Mind Apiary is slowing down the soap making practice and using a “cold pressed” technique that was common thousands of years ago. This means clean and simple ingredients, using ingredients that are locally available, and leaves you with a real, pure, and simple soap that combines the centuries of craftsmanship with a modern sophistication.

OVERVIEW

Description

Apart from producing some of the best raw honey in Salt Lake City, the Hive Mind Apiary also makes some of the best soaps in the valley.

It all starts with fat… Fats and oils can be recycled by most food service industries through local services, but the dirty secret is that most oils are simply thrown away and destined for the landfill. Reclaiming that “waste” can help reduce the damages caused by this improper disposal. The Hive Apiary hand selects fats and oils from local sources and then naturally refines them until they are acceptable to use in their soap. Depending on what “waste” fats and oils are syphoned, the soap scents are constantly changing.

Burnt Honey & Vetiver:
Vetiver is one of those wonderful “Old World” scents largely looked over in the modern body care landscape. Once upon a time, it was in nearly all “Mens” products from shaving creams and aftershaves to deodorants and colognes. It’s scent is best described as fresh uncut grass on a warm spring day with hints of leather and just a hint of pine or sage.

Coffee Peppermint:
A must for hard working hands! Hive Mind Apiary starts with a coarse grind of coffee beans from local roasters. The coarse grind gives a truly wonderful grit, but the real power of the coffee grounds is in its naturally deodorizing properties and that they are not previously brewed. Many soap makers used previously brewed coffee grounds which robs the user of the most important aspect of coffee… The all powerful caffeine! While you won’t get the standard boost you would from a cup of joe, caffeine can be and is absorbed topically! The caffeine brings blood to the surface, which in turn smooths and tightens the skin.

If that weren’t enough, this wonderful little bar is scented with peppermint essential oil. A classic fresh smell that naturally uplifts, and tingles in all the right ways!

Plus it’s infused with local raw honey from the Wasatch Front to add lather and a healthy helping of vitamins and minerals!

Pink Peony
Romantic, powdery, floral. Blends well with: lavender, rose, orange, lemon, Jasmine and most other floral fragrances oil.

Blood Orange & Mulling Spice
This one is only available seasonally. Orange is wonderful, but blood orange sounds so much cooler! Despite being the most metal sounding fruit, it’s actually much sweeter. The sweetness paired with mulling spice (clove, anise, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice) make for a wonderfully warm soap bar, great for the winter season.

Right before wrapping up our interview with Jane Lotubai, she interjected how strongly she feels that the word “environmentalism” needs reimagining. She wants to be a part of a new brand of environmentalism that prioritizes social and environmental justice and includes and empowers all people-- especially those most vulnerable.

Jane and her family fled to Nairobi, Kenya, as refugees from South Sudan in 1991. In 2003, Jane's mother, seeking better opportunities and a safer upbringing for her children, immigrated to the United States. Jane and her family moved from state to state before settling in Utah. She became accustomed to being the new kid and the only black person in the classroom or neighborhood. The Lotubias landed in Salt Lake City because Utah, unbeknownst to many, is home to a large and thriving Sudanese community with over 65 ethinc groups represented. Every year leaders within the community organize meet-ups and parties, and provide a strong safety net for one another.

Jane’s driving passion is fashion. Every facet of the creative process, from modeling, to behind-the-scenes runway design, enthralls and inspires her. She does, however, avoid fast fashion, and instead advocates for well made and long lasting garments. Since a young age, her mom has embedded a deep thriftiness in her and her siblings. Her household reuses and repurposes everything from containers to clothes. When clothes get too worn to wear, Jane will often design outfits and her mom, who is an expert seamstress, will sew (or teach Jane how to sew) her vision into reality.

The Black Lives Matter movement is important to Jane, and she participated in several of the recent protests-- even if that meant going alone. Environmentalism and social justice should not be happening independently of each other. But when she thinks of the word “environmentalism” she thinks of white-washed marketing and privilege. She said “I’m still trying to feel comfortable and safe walking down the street, and I don’t think people understand what a privilege it is to have the time and energy to advocate for the environment.”
